The Perfectly Average Mage

Synopsis

The story follows a man who discovers his magical abilities, only to be repeatedly confronted with the mediocrity of his talents. Initially excited about his magical powers, he quickly learns that millions of others share this gift, and his own abilities are unremarkable. The protagonist experiences a cycle of discoveries and disappointments—finding magical artifacts that turn out to be common, uncovering hidden talents that prove average, and even briefly believing himself to be "the chosen one" before learning it was merely a prank by his classmates.

Throughout his journey, the man continues to find what he believes are exceptional qualities or lineages about himself, including a connection to an ancient king of mages and a secret book of magic. However, each discovery is followed by the deflating realization that his situation is far less special than he initially thought—whether it's learning that millions share his royal bloodline or that his "secret magic" has been common knowledge for centuries. Even when he experiences genuine growth in his powers, the improvement is modest, barely elevating him above the middle ranks.

Despite the constant pattern of hope and disillusionment, the protagonist persists in his magical journey. His experiences oscillate between discovering apparent specialness and then learning the mundane truth behind each revelation. His modest talent at controlling and using magic initially seems promising, only to be revealed as another area where he ranks as decidedly average among the magical community, continuing the cycle of raised expectations followed by the reality of his ordinariness.
